Gustavo Scarpa’s book-review videos have sparked Galeitura, an Atlético-MG supporters’ reading club that has spilled beyond its bubble and caught attention overseas. According to Globo.com, the player-led habit has prompted fans of rival teams to set up their own groups.

The club was created by literature student and Galo fan Carolina Marques after a post on X proposing a space to read Scarpa’s picks. She woke to hundreds of requests the next day, and the membership snowballed.

The first title, Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich, was chosen on a Monday and by Tuesday was Amazon Brazil’s top seller. Galeitura now has more than 500 members on WhatsApp and over 80,000 followers on Instagram, with a three-week schedule and a live discussion opened this week.

Argentina’s Olé highlighted Scarpa’s passion, framing his journey from Libertadores winner to cultural phenomenon in Brazil. Scarpa then surprised members by joining the group, arranged through Carolina. His reading recommendations date back to 2018 at Palmeiras, and he recently launched a YouTube channel for reviews.

Scarpa has also encouraged team-mates to read, including Cuello, Victor Hugo, Ruan Tressoldi, Igor Gomes, Léo Duarte and Tomás Pérez. The ripple has reached other fanbases, with Cruzeiro’s Cruleitores emerging despite early online hostility before gaining support. Corinthians fans founded Fiel Leitores, and São Paulo and Grêmio supporters have created clubs of their own.
