Vasco have made appointing a head coach their top priority, and Marcelo Gallardo is among the names under discussion. The Argentine has been without a club since February after leaving River Plate, and there is no offer on the table.

According to Globo.com, Gallardo is well regarded by the hierarchy. He was contacted before Renato Gaúcho arrived in March, having just ended his second spell at River Plate without success, and chose not to take another job immediately.

Other options include Hernán Crespo, out of work since São Paulo dismissed him in March, though he is not among the leading candidates. The list also features coaches under contract elsewhere.

There is urgency at the club to settle on a new manager quickly. Internally, the view is that the next appointment will be tasked with lifting out of form players and getting more from those signed in the last window. The board spent more than R$ 100 million on six signings and believes all can contribute more in the second half of the year.

The profile sought is a coach with strong group management and a positive environment, able to work particularly well with the squad’s eight foreign players. There has been unease in the dressing room over recent remarks from Renato. The first major flashpoint came when, asked about Marino Hinestroza’s poor form, he said players born in Colombia and Ecuador find it very hard to adapt to Brazilian football.
