Omar Marmoush scored twice as City cruised into the final of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 (5-1 aggregate) victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s men came into the encounter with a healthy lead following our 2-0 first leg victory at St James’ Park last month and we picked up exactly where we left off with Marmoush’s seventh minute opener, as the ball deflected off the striker’s foot from Dan Burn’s tackle and looped into the net.
Our lively and energetic Egyptian forward was in the right place at the right time again shortly before the half-hour mark, nodding in from close-range to double his and our tally on the night.
The momentum and attacking intensity was in our favour and two minutes later we added a third of the evening, with Tijjani Reijnders sweeping in from 15 yards from a swift and efficient counter-attack.
Sandwiched between our goals was superb goalkeeping from James Trafford, who came out swiftly to smother at the feet of both Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon to preserve our clean sheet.
We dominated possession after the break and the influential Reijnders could have doubled his tally shortly before the hour mark, but the Dutchman slid his shot just wide, before Anthony Elanga pulled one goal back for the visitors.
We retained control of the tie and deservedly booked our place in next month’s Wembley showpiece final against Arsenal.
