Disaster struck for AC Milan as they lost their final Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb, dropping into the play-offs as a result.

Milan knew that with a win they would finish at least sixth in the table having won five on a spin, but a loss would see them probably drop out of the top eight. Sure enough, a 2-1 defeat in the Croatian capital followed, and now a very tough path forward awaits.

As expected, the newspapers in Italy have made it very clear how Milan missed out on a big opportunity to help themselves.

La Gazzetta dello Sport: “The Diavolo throw it away. Beaten by Cannavaro, risk of derby against Juve. Conceiçao: ‘Very disappointed, we lack grinta’.”

Corriere dello Sport: “Italicidio. Juve collapse, Milan darkness, derby risk. Thiago loses 2-0 at home against Benfica and could meet Leao, defeated in Zagreb.”
