AC Milan fell to their ninth defeat of the Serie A season last night, losing 2-1 against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Milan were the victims of yet another slow start, trailing 2-0 at half-time after goals by Matteo Politano and Romelu Lukaku. Santiago Gimenez missed a penalty which could have reopened the contest, before Luka Jovic scored what would end up being merely a late consolation.
The result means that the Rossoneri lose further ground on the teams above them and are now nine points away from the Champions League places.
The Italian papers have focused more on the fact that Napoli responded to Inter’s earlier win in the Scudetto battle, but made reference to a familiar sinking feeling for Milan.
La Gazzetta dello Sport: “To hell with Europe, only the derby left. Conceiçao falls down, but will rely on Leao on Wednesday in the first-leg of the semi-final.”
Corriere dello Sport: “Conte pressure. Politano shocks Conceiçao, Lukaku scores the 400th goal. Meret saves a Gimenez penalty. Useless Jovic goal in the final minutes. Loftus-Cheek out due to acute appendicitis.”
Tuttosport: “Conte doesn’t give up. Inter’s thrilling win, but Napoli make Milan sink and remain three points behind. Politano and Lukaku score right away, Gimenez misses a penalty, Jovic scores but it’s not enough. Loftus-Cheek in hospital, Ibra returns: ‘Hit by a virus, I was shocked.’”
QS: “Conte pride. Milan defeated by Politano and Lukaku.”
