Gareth Southgate would reject an approach from Manchester United if Ruben Amorim is sacked.
Southgate has been linked with United, with Amorim on the brink following the club’s disastrous start to the new campaign.
The Portuguese boss is understood to retain the board’s support, but they are still making contingency plans.
Southgate is reportedly on a three-man shortlist to replace Amorim, along with Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola.
However, the Daily Mirror claim the 55-year-old is not keen to take over as United’s new head coach.
Southgate has been out of a job since leaving England last summer, but he is in no rush to return to management.
Amorim has lost the faith of United supporters after the humiliating 3-1 defeat at Brentford last Saturday.
The Red Devils were appalling at the Gtech Community Stadium, as they conceded two shocking goals inside the opening 20 minutes.
Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for the visitors, but the Bees cruised to a comfortable 3-1 win after Mathias Jensen’s injury-time goal.
United will welcome Sunderland at Old Trafford this weekend, and Amorim must lead his team to victory against the newly-promoted side.
A defeat or even a draw will likely force the club’s hierarchy to make a change in the dugout during the international break.
The Manchester titans are already languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and they cannot afford to drop any more points.
