Alejandro Garnacho’s second-half equaliser ensured Chelsea avoided defeat in Azerbaijan, but they were unable to find a winner as they drew 2-2 with Qarabag.
Enzo Maresca opted to make seven changes to his side but they took the lead in the Champions League clash through Estevao, who scored his fourth goal of the season.
But Chelsea found themselves behind at the break. The home side levelled when Jorrel Hato failed to deal with a long ball, allowing Camilo Duran to win possession. His shot cannoned back off the post but Leandro Andrade was there to put in the rebound.
Hato was again at fault for Qarabag’s second, giving the ball away cheaply before inadvertently blocking Andrade’s cross with his hand, conceding a penalty which Marco Jankovic converted.
Maresca opted to introduce Garnacho at the break in place of Jamie Gittens and the Argentine quickly made an impact, curling into the bottom corner to level the score.
But despite piling on the pressure in the second half, the Blues were unable to find a winner.
Maresca has also been handed another injury headache, with Romeo Lavia forced off in the first half.
