Gary Neville has offered a glowing verdict on Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, backing the teenager’s potential. His comments come amid growing chatter over the England youth international’s trajectory.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old is on loan at Salford City and has already made 45 appearances this season, surpassing last term’s tally of 27 across all competitions.

Young joined Sunderland at seven and signed his first professional deal in November 2023. A senior loan at Darlington brought the club’s Young Player of the Season award, and subsequent spells with Salford have provided consistent minutes.

Internationally, he has moved through England’s U18s, U19s and U20s to earn a call-up to the U21s. That rise has prompted suggestions he could one day challenge for a senior spot.

Neville said Young has done really well and is notably composed for his age. He noted the loan runs until the end of the season, and he hopes Salford win promotion to League One so the keeper could return with them. Neville believes Young has a big future.
