There was late drama at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night
Gary Neville has fired a shot at Arsenal, telling the Gunners that they need to “wake up” if they are to win the Premier League.
The north Londoners just about beat bottom side Wolves 2-1 on Saturday evening, with a Yerson Mosquera own goal in injury time sparing Mikel Arteta’s blushes.
Arsenal had been pegged back in stoppage time by Tolu Arokodare’s late header to cancel out Sam Johnstone’s earlier own goal.
However, at the death, the ball flicked off the head of Mosquera and into the far corner to give the Gunners all three points and put the onus back onto Manchester City in the title race.
Arteta’s men sit two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side after City’s 3-0 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday, but Neville, the former Manchester United defender, believes that if Arsenal continue to play like they did against Wolves, their hopes of lifting a first title since 2003 could diminish.
“If you’re getting into the changing room after the game, I think you’re probably getting a little bit of a telling off from your coach, saying basically, ‘That’s not good enough and you need to step your level of performance up.’
“If you play like that too many times then you won’t win this league.
“On the other hand, part of you is saying that you’re going to have performances and moments like this during the season and it’s not all going to be plain sailing.’
“If I was in the dressing room I’d be giving myself a little bit of a slap around the face and saying, ‘Wake up, come on! We’re going to be in danger if we carry on playing at this level.’
“There has been a little bit of a dip for Arsenal in terms of performance, but it was important that they did get those three points, that is vital.”
Arteta returned Viktor Gyokeres to his starting XI for the clash with Wolves, dropping Mikel Merino after the Spaniard’s hot streak in front of goal.
Gyokeres endured a difficult evening, and was withdrawn with nine minutes to play.
He was replaced by Gabriel Jesus, who was making his comeback after a long spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury.
It was the Brazilian who challenged for the cross that led to Arsenal’s winner, although he was not credited with a fairytale winner, with the ball clearing going in off Mosquera.
