Gary O’Neil has criticised Strasbourg’s owners after a limp end to their cup campaigns. According to ExpressAndStar.com, his remarks have caused a stir in France.
The former Wolves boss was outspoken during his final weeks at Molineux. Shortly before he was sacked in 2024, he challenged his players over a lack of responsibility, then was dismissed and briefly considered a return after Vitor Pereira’s exit.
He stepped away from that possibility and took over at Strasbourg in Ligue 1, replacing Liam Rosenior, who had moved to Chelsea. O’Neil has won six of his 15 league matches, but cup runs faltered, with defeat to Real Vallecano in the last four of the UEFA Conference League and a 2-0 loss to Nice in the Coupe de France semi-finals.
Both Chelsea and Strasbourg are owned by BlueCo, fronted by Todd Boehly alongside other investors. O’Neil said the squad was weakened in January, that he needs two centre forwards, and added the owners want to give him the means to perform next season, but the club must improve its culture, player quality and depth.
Mamadou Sarr, a key figure in the first half of the season while on loan from Chelsea, was sent back mid-campaign. Ecuador international Kendry Paez also had his season-long loan cut short by Chelsea and was immediately loaned out again to River Plate.
