Former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil has issued a warning to Ruben Amorim over his Manchester United future after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.
The Red Devils were stunned at the Gtech Community Stadium when Igor Thiago fired a double inside the opening 20 minutes.
Benjamin Sesko halved the deficit with his first goal since joining United in a £74 million move from RB Leipzig.
Bruno Fernandes had the golden opportunity to level the scores in the second half when Nathan Collins dragged Bryan Mbeumo back inside the area. But the 31-year-old’s tame effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.
Mathias Jensen wrapped up the win for Brentford with a brilliant goal from outside the box deep in stoppage time.
O’Neil, who has previously managed Bournemouth and Wolves, has warned that Amorim could be in trouble if the Portuguese fails to win the next home fixture against newly-promoted Sunderland next weekend.
He told Sky Sports: “Yeah I suppose it is a natural time for clubs to look to make changes. I love to see managers given time as you know I am biased. I am a manager so I want them all to be given time and to be given the opportunity to show how good they are.
“But international breaks do tend to, we do tend to see more changes. Lets make no bones about it, Sunderland at home, newly promoted side, when you are Manchester United, with the run they are on, it is going to be a must win for them. It is a big big game.”
United’s hierarchy backed Amorim well in the summer transfer market, making funds available for the signings of Matheus Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko and Senne Lammens.
But the team has picked up just seven points from six Premier League matches, sitting 14th in the table.
Amorim’s side were not entirely convincing against Chelsea last weekend but secured maximum points from the home clash after goals from Fernandes and Casemiro.
United should have built on that result but they fell to a humiliating loss at Brentford, bringing back enormous scrutiny on Amorim.
If the Portuguese fails to win against Sunderland, the club’s board could wield the axe on his tenure.
