Ipswich have appointed former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil as manager on a three-year deal to summer 2029 ahead of their Premier League return.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 43-year-old joins from Strasbourg and replaces Kieran McKenna, who stepped down earlier this month after five years.
McKenna had led Ipswich to automatic promotion at the end of last season, 12 months after their relegation from the top flight.
O’Neil guided Wolves to 14th last season, beating Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals.
A late collapse at home to then Championship side Coventry City denied a Wembley trip and, despite a new long-term contract, marked the start of his Molineux downturn.
He later departed with Wolves 19th, four points behind fourth-bottom Crystal Palace, after a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich that completed four straight league losses and 11 defeats in 16.
At Strasbourg he took the team to the semi-finals of the Conference League and the Coupe de France.
He becomes the 20th manager in Ipswich’s 90-year history and will be assisted by Tim Jenkins, Neil Critchley and Ed Ames, who worked with him in France.
O’Neil called the appointment an honour, said he had tracked Ipswich’s progress in recent years and expressed excitement about leading the club in the Premier League.
He also spoke of the club’s vision and ambition, the responsibility to supporters and the community, and his eagerness to meet everyone and get to work.
