Millwall manager Gary Rowett says that Ben Thompson will want to play regular football, something he is not currently getting for the club.

Thompson has played just one minute of Championship action for Millwall so far these season, which came back in August, having seemingly fallen down the pecking order at The Den.

Portsmouth were again linked with a move for the midfielder in the summer transfer window, having previously taken Thompson on loan during the 2018/19 season, although no move materialised this time around.

But with the 26-year-old now struggling for game time with Millwall, that has led to questions over his future once more.

Now, Rowett has admitted that Thompson is not getting as much game time as he would like for his side, potentially leaving the door open for a January departure.

Speaking about the situation Thompson finds himself, in the Millwall boss was quoted by News at Den as saying: “We’ve got a really strong squad this season.

“There is lots of competition in midfield and Thommo hasn’t had many opportunities. Every player should want to play regular football and Thommo is no different.”

As things stand, Thompson is currently into the final year of his contract as a Millwall player, meaning he could leave the club for free at the end of this season.

The Verdict

It does seem as though a move away from Millwall could make sense for Thompson.

As Rowett says, he is at the stage of his career where he should be playing first-team football as much as possible, and that is not happening at Millwall right now.

You do however, feel there are other clubs that would be willing to offer him those opportunities, meaning a move elsewhere could certainly be appealing for the 26-year-old.

A January sale could also be good for Millwall to ensure they get a fee for him, but you wonder how many clubs would be willing to pay for a player they could sign for free in just a few more month’s time.
