Gian Piero Gasperini is delighted that Atalanta reserves played a key role in a 2-0 win over Monza and notes that Nicolò Zaniolo put in his first ‘important’ performance in Bergamo.
La Dea climbed to the third spot in the Serie A table, overtaking Juventus thanks to a 2-0 win over Monza on Wednesday.
“It was a challenging game for Monza’s merit. They had great energy, and we struggled in the first half. They didn’t create much, but we were not dangerous,” Gasperini told DAZN.
Lazar Samardzic and Davide Zappacosta were introduced from the bench in the second half and got their names on the scoresheet.
“Perhaps we were a bit tired, especially on the wings. Fresh energy in the second half was crucial. I am happy with Zaniolo. It’s the first important performance he makes. Clearly, Samardzic and Zappacosta scored, Cuadrado boosted energy, and Kossounou proved he has recovered from injury. It was an important game,” continued Gasp.
“We have a solid defence and midfield which always give us strength and competitiveness. Generally, you can unlock these games when you have pace on the wings and pass the ball quickly. It’s not always possible to score at the start of a match.
“Opponents gain confidence as the minutes pass, and the bench is crucial in those moments. Those who entered from the bench played a key role. This means the team isn’t made of 11 players but 16.”
Atalanta meet table leaders Napoli this coming weekend before a new Champions League match next week.
“We’ve climbed the table and played some games at home,” concluded Gasp.
“Now face some big teams. Napoli are doing extraordinary things, and then we have the Champions League on Wednesday. We always think about it. It will be an exciting week.”
