Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso said his players are fully focused on securing qualification as the Azzurri prepare to face Israel, in a match that could confirm their place in the World Cup playoffs.

Speaking to Sky Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, Gattuso began by addressing the wider context, welcoming the news of a ceasefire in Gaza.

“We’re happy that there’s been this truce,” he said. “Seeing people return home in Gaza, to their land, is emotional. Tomorrow we’ll play our game – there will be protests outside, but more than 10,000 fans inside pushing us on.”

The Italy coach expressed pride in his squad’s attitude and togetherness. “I fall in love with these lads because of how they work and stay united,” he said.

“We know we’re on a journey and can’t afford to make mistakes, but I like how we’re growing.”

Gattuso on Italy tweaks and starlet Pio Esposito

Gattuso suggested he may tweak his formation and praised Francesco Pio Esposito, who could start after impressing off the bench.

“He’s a simple guy with big qualities – he runs like a midfielder,” Gattuso explained. “He understands the game easily. Matches last 95 minutes, and some players make the difference at the end.”

Reflecting on his role as Italy boss, Gattuso admitted the position still feels surreal. “There are so many people who’d pay to be here,” he said. “I live it like a dream. I think of the great coaches like Lippi and Trapattoni and wonder who would’ve thought I’d get this chance. I’ve worked with many people here for years, so it feels like home.”

He also responded to praise from Luciano Spalletti. “He’s very direct, I appreciated his words,” Gattuso said.

“I wanted to call him, but didn’t want to bother him. I told people in the federation what kind of man he is – when he speaks, he never gives empty compliments.”
