“Gave everything” – Chelsea fans will draw negative comparisons to Liam Rosenior’s words

Chelsea fans will most certainly be drawing some negative comparisons to words said by Liam Rosenior last night.

Chelsea lost 3-2 against Arsenal. Of course, it wasn’t as straight-cut as Chelsea losing the game. They were missing the majority of their key players and had a depleted squad due to injuries and illnesses. There is a big gap between Chelsea and Arsenal in the league, so Arsenal would have already been clear favourites to win the game and go through in this competition. So they were fighting against the tide anyway and showed good spirit and character to come back into the game twice, scoring two goals, and keeping the two-legged tie alive. They deserve a lot of credit for all of that.

But when losing a game, Chelsea fans don’t really like to hear a manager saying that they are ‘happy’ and that all the player gave everything. It reminds them of the negative experience of Graham Potter, who always used to say ‘the boys gave everything’ after a defeat. It’s just not smart.

Not everyone gave everything

I mean, you can’t say that Robert Sanchez ‘gave everything’ with an absolutely hideous display from him, making two big errors leading directly to a goal.

And you can’t say the Chelsea centre backs ‘gave everything’ after the spent most of the game finding it impossible to play out from the back.

Alejandro Garnacho, and a chunk of the rest of the players you can say ‘gave everything’ sure, as it was his hugely important late goal that kept Chelsea in the game. But you certainly can’t say every player gave everything and it’s also not the thing to say after a defeat. But he said it..

Rosenior: They gave everything

In comments picked up on X last night after the defeat, Rosenior said:

“It’s half-time in the tie. I was very happy with the engagement and commitment of the players. They gave everything.”

Please stop with the Potter impressions.
