José Luis Gayà marked Valencia’s meeting with Celta de Vigo by hitting two milestones that place him alongside club greats. According to Superdeporte, the captain has stayed through the club’s toughest spell and continues to front up.
He received from Enrique Saura a commemorative shirt for 400 official games. By playing this match, his 401st for Valencia, the Pedreguer-born captain moved past Saura and earned a loud ovation at Mestalla.
He also drew level with David Albelda as the third player with the most league appearances at Mestalla on 177. Only Ricardo Arias on 184 and Fernando Gómez Colomer on 209 are ahead of him.
Gayà wore a custom protective mask to shield facial injuries after two blows suffered against Sevilla sent him to hospital.
When he was substituted and removed the mask, his face showed heavy swelling, which he still carries.
