According to L'Équipe, Gennaro Gattuso left his role as Italy head coach on Friday after the team failed to reach the 2026 World Cup. There had been a slight possibility of him staying until June, but both parties have ended their collaboration.
Appointed in June 2025, he could not guide Italy through the European play-offs, losing the final to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday, 1-1 then 1-4 on penalties.
Gattuso said he regarded his mandate as over, noting it was a heavy-hearted decision after missing the objective they had set.
His exit had been expected since that defeat. He becomes the third departure in a matter of days, following federation president Gabriele Gravina and Gianluigi Buffon.
The federation, speaking through its outgoing president, thanked Gattuso for reigniting enthusiasm around the national team in just a few months.
