Geny Catamo is increasingly likely to remain at Sporting CP this summer, with Sunderland’s pursuit yet to meet the Lisbon club’s demands, A Bola reports.

The Black Cats have tabled bids for the Mozambique winger, but an opening offer of €30 million plus €10 million in bonuses was rejected. A subsequent proposal, with a higher fixed fee, still fell short of a valuation understood to be around €40 million.

Catamo is viewed as fundamental to head coach Rui Borges’ plans, with talk of a departure dependent on a late surprise or new bidders.

“I believe that, given the opportunity, Geny would like to take the leap and would like to play in England and for Sunderland,” Luis Gonçalves told Noticias ao Minuto.

“I have no doubt that, if Geny moves to the Premier League, he will be able to establish himself, despite it being a much more demanding league physically and also due to the intensity of the game. The question that always arises is whether they have a replacement at the time. I believe that Sporting's scouting department is working towards that, in coordination with the technical team, led by Rui Borges, and also with the president.”

Sunderland remain keen to add attacking options before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
