George Desmond Kamurasi, London goalkeeper named king of Tooro after cousin’s death | OneFootball

George Desmond Kamurasi, captain and goalkeeper of non-league SE Dons in London, has been declared successor to the Tooro throne in Uganda following the death of his cousin, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

According to Spy Uganda, Kamurasi does not want to leave the UK, and some in Tooro are sceptical because he grew up in Britain and is married to a British woman.

Rukidi IV died on 27 August in the United States while receiving cancer treatment. He first assumed the throne aged three in 1995, then the youngest monarch in history.

On Friday a committee named Kamurasi as successor in line with the will of Olimi Kaboyo II. That will placed his son Rukidi IV first, as happened in 1995, then his nephew Kamurasi because Rukidi IV never married or had children. This version is disputed in Uganda, with speculation that he might have an unrecognised heir.

Kamurasi, 36, spent the weekend in the FA Cup first qualifying round, a 2-0 win over Erith Town. He now faces a decision about leaving London for a kingdom of about 800,000 people in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Known as Big G at SE Dons, he plays in the Southern Counties East Football League, the ninth and 10th tiers of English football. The club were founded in 2014 by rapper Andrew McHugh, known as Don Strapzy, and are enjoying their first FA Cup preliminaries.

Their second-round FA Cup meeting with Greenways next Saturday coincides with Rukidi IV’s funeral in Uganda, so the prospective new king might not be able to attend.
