Spurs continue drive to sign young talent with England Under-16s captain
Tottenham have signed former Chelsea academy defender George Jobling following a successful trial.
Jobling, who has played for Chelsea’s Under-16s and U17s this season, was released by the Blues after not being offered a scholarship deal.
Chelsea will not receive a fee for the 16-year-old right-back.
The England youth international will now join up with Spurs’ U18s before signing his first professional deal when he turns 17 later this year.
Jobling featured for Spurs U16s against Man City in the Premier League Cup earlier this month, but will mainly be involved with Jamie Carr's U18s side, who have won 10 of their 24 league games this season.
Jobling is expected to be Tottenham’s sole representative for England’s U16s, when they play against Denmark, Spain and France this week.
Spurs have brought in several new players for the club’s academy in the last month, with Elisha Sowunmi and James Wilson both joining the club’s U21s team in January.
Sowunmi joined Spurs from West Ham after deciding not to sign a new contract at the east London club, while Spurs beat off competition from Arsenal to sign Wilson on loan from Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts on Deadline Day.
Providing a pathway for the club’s academy players has been a major concern for supporters, with former first-team manager Thomas Frank offering limited opportunities to the club's academy graduates.
Under new interim manager Igor Tudor, though, there are expected to be fresh opportunities for players to impress, and Wilson was pictured in first-team training ahead of this weekend's north London Derby.
