According to Globo.com, former Vasco playmaker Geovani Silva died early on Monday, 18 May, following a cardiac arrest. Tributes from across football quickly followed.

Among them, former Vasco goalkeeper Carlos Germano posted a video reacting to the news. He underlined Geovani’s stature in Brazilian football and their close bond, calling him one of the club’s greatest number eights.

Geovani made 408 appearances for the Rio club and scored 50 goals.

Germano said Geovani had been a major inspiration in his career and that he was deeply saddened by the loss. He noted Geovani had been fighting daily to remain among friends, and sent strength, peace and calm to the family. He added that the “Pequeno Príncipe da Colina” would always stay with them.

The pair were Vasco team-mates at different points in the early 1990s. Germano stepped up from the academy in 1990, as Geovani ended his first spell with the club. They later shared the squad that won the Carioca title in 1992 and 1993.
