Gérard Lopez’s 2021 takeover, since followed by a sale to Park Bench, coincided with Bordeaux’s descent from Ligue one to Régional one across five seasons, according to L'Équipe.
In 2021-22 Lopez appointed Vladimir Petkovic, then sacked him on six February 2022 with the side 19th. David Guion could not avert a 20th-place drop, and after a DNCG demotion the FFF kept Bordeaux in Ligue two.
In 2022-23 Guion’s team finished third, behind Le Havre and three points off Metz. The finale against Rodez was halted on 27 minutes after a fan assaulted Lucas Buades, and the CNOSF awarded a forfeit plus a one-point deduction.
Under Albert Riera in 2023-24 Bordeaux ended 12th, then in July were sent to National, then National two, by the DNCG. A proposed Fenway Sports Group takeover collapsed, the CNOSF did not back reinstatement, and the club lost professional status and 90 jobs.
In 2024-25 they began National two at Sainte-Germaine in Le Bouscat. Andy Carroll arrived in September but they finished fourth, and Oliver Kahn’s takeover attempt failed.
In 2025-26 they played at Bordeaux’s Stade Atlantique. Bruno Irles was sacked in March, Rio Mavuba took over and they finished second before the DNCG excluded them after Sparta Capital failed to raise €10 million.
By 2026-27 they were out of the Coupe de France, losing 1-5 to Angoulême. They should open their Régional one Group B campaign away to Aviron Bayonnais reserves on 17 October at 15:00.
