Aitor Larrazabal says Beñat Gerenabarrena could have signed for Real Sociedad before Athletic moved quickly to bring him into their Infantil B side for 2015-16.

In 2014-15, the Lekeitio-born midfielder trained once a week at Lezama from Aurrera de Ondarroa, travelling with other prospects from Lea-Artibai and the Duranguesado through partner clubs such as Cultural and Gernika.

“When I was in Athletic’s sporting department I received a call from those around him. Gere came to train with us at Lezama once a week. They told me that in two days he was going to Zubieta to sign for Real Sociedad.” He told Radio Bilbao.

“I called his mother and the next day his family came to sign with Athletic,” he added.

Gerenabarrena later progressed through the academy alongside 2003 cohort-mates Padilla, Rego and Rincón, and has emerged as an early-season standout after a spell with CD Castellón.
