Thomas Müller is thinking about the time after his active career – and is not ruling out a career as a coach. In an interview with kicker, the FC Bayern club icon confirmed that the idea appeals to him in principle. However, there are no concrete plans as yet
„Yes,“ replied the 2014 world champion when asked whether he could imagine a career as a coach. At the same time, the 36-year-old made it clear that he deliberately wants to take his time. „I don’t know what training path I will take when I hang up my soccer boots at some point. That will also depend on what I feel inside me after a while.“
Müller first wants to clarify whether he wants to remain part of the soccer world at all: „Do I want to continue to be part of this soccer world that has given me so many emotions? If so, do I want to be on the pitch?“ The coaching job in particular brings little stability – apart from the youth sector
At the same time, Müller emphasized the importance of „trainers“ in German soccer, saying that coaches who are not primarily concerned with their own careers, but with shaping players and making them better, are urgently needed

When asked whether he could one day follow in the footsteps of iconic coach Hermann Gerland at FC Bayern, Müller responded cautiously. „We’re a bit different as types,“ he explained with a smile. He doesn’t have a clear direction at the moment – and doesn’t want to force it on himself just yet
„I don’t have the feeling that it has to happen very quickly,“ said Müller. He doesn’t want to secure a coaching license on the side just to be prepared. If he takes this path, then it will be conscious and an independent part of his journey – whether in soccer or outside of it
All doors would certainly be open to Müller at FC Bayern after his active career. Those responsible have emphasized this several times in the past. But the attacking player remains calm here too. „I’m not an exclusionary player and currently love being a player,“ says Müller
His contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps runs until the end of the year. It remains to be seen whether another chapter as a player will follow or whether the transition to a new role will slowly begin. One thing is clear: Müller does not want to make a decision out of habit – but out of conviction.
