A 35-year-old German amateur footballer has been arrested on suspicion of fatally poisoning a team-mate during an end-of-season trip to Dresden. Prosecutors are treating the case as an alleged act of revenge.

Police detained the suspect, named Marius, on Tuesday 1 September on suspicion of poisoning his 30-year-old team-mate, Philipp. According to NeedToKnow, medical examinations found septic multi-organ failure caused by poisoning, with Philipp dying in hospital on 16 June 2025 after falling ill on the TuS Rockenberg trip.

Team-mates and relatives first thought it was severe food poisoning after the squad ate fish. Forensic inquiries later indicated a deliberate killing.

Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hauburger said investigators believe the motive was revenge. Rockenberg head of football Manuel Barufe said the club were shocked and hoped police would fully clarify events.

In a formal statement, Rockenberg said they were devastated, would not comment during the investigation and urged that players, coaches and board members were not approached. The club asked for privacy as the judicial process continues.

Marius remains in pre-trial detention while state prosecutors and police pursue their inquiry. The arrest came two weeks before he was due to host a major wedding celebration, after a civil ceremony held following the incident last year. Neither he nor his legal team have responded publicly as authorities work to establish the sequence of events.
