Freiburg’s spectacular comeback victory over regional rivals VfB Stuttgart this weekend did produce one unfortunate late casualty. At the tail end of the Saturday Bundesliga fixture, Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi was sent off on a straight red. Manzambi’s high boot to the head of Stuttgart defender Ramon Hendriks at 90+8 will cost him two league fixtures.

The German FA confirmed a two-match-ban for the 19-year-old on Monday. Manzambi remains eligible to participate in Freiburg’s Europa League fixtures, but will be unavailable for forthcoming league matches against SV Werder Bremen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. SCF head coach Julian Schuster will be unable to call upon Manzambi until October.

Manzambi, finally back in his preferred role as a No. 10, was highly influential for the Breisgauer late in the match. The now four-times-capped Swiss international played an important role in Derry Scherhant’s 86th-minute 2-1 and drew the penalty that enabled Igor Matanovic to make it 3-1 from the spot at 90+2. The latter goal allowed Manzambi to record his first assist of the new season.
