Germany travel to North America for the FIFA World Cup this summer aiming to add a record-equalling fifth star to their crest and put the demons of consecutive group-stage exits firmly behind them.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side eased through their World Cup qualification group, recording five wins from six matches, and they also performed well as the host nation at Euro 2024, perhaps unlucky to fall to Spain in the quarterfinals.

Since their 2014 triumph — when they famously defeated Brazil 7-1 in the semi-final before beating Argentina in the final — Germany have experienced a difficult spell at major international tournaments, suffering shocking group-stage exits at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

However, the mood around the camp has shifted considerably under Nagelsmann, and there is genuine optimism heading into North America.

The biggest talking point surrounding the squad was the dramatic return of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who retired from international football after Euro 2024 but has been recalled and confirmed as Nagelsmann’s first choice between the posts.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz — who missed the 2022 tournament through injury — will finally make his World Cup debut, and 18-year-old Lennart Karl has broken through at just the right moment to earn his place in the squad.

Germany are in Group E at the tournament with Curaçao, Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador.
