The Women’s Euros will be played in Switzerland next month. One of the favorites for the title, Germany announced its squad with some notable names missing for different reasons. Die Nationalelf lost the final to England in the last championship.
Alexandra Popp was the star player in that run, but she retired from international football after last year’s Olympics. Meanwhile, Lena Oberdorf, who was named the best young player of the 2022 tournament, couldn’t make the squad due to her lengthy absence due to injury.
This season’s Bundesliga top-scorer Nicole Anyomi will also miss the tournament as she’s recovering from a knee injury. Including Wolfsburg’s new signing Cora Zicai, the squad includes seven players who will take part in their first major tournament.
One of the 11 players from the previous European championship squad, Giulia Gwinn will be the captain. Her Bayern teammate Lea Schüller, star midfielder Sara Däbritz and goalkeeper Ann-Kathrin Berger are the other notable names in the final list.
Germany are seeded in a group with Denmark, Sweden and Poland. Christian Wück, who won the men's U17 Euros and World Cup with the men’s team, is the coach of Germany’s women team since last year.
