Germany assistant Sandro Wagner turns down Hoffenheim job | OneFootball

Bild reports that Germany assistant manager Sandro Wagner turned down the opportunity to become Hoffenheim‘s head coach.

Wagner has decided to stay with the German national team as he wants to be involved in the process in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup. Hoffenheim saw Wagner as head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s successor as the American is in the running for the vacant USA job, but the former striker politely turned down his former club.

It is not ruled out that in the future Hoffenheim try and hire Wagner again as his contract with the DFB expires after the World Cup in North America. Wagner played 50 times for Hoffenheim over an 18 month spell scoring 18 and assisting eight.

Hoffenheim has been linked with other head coaches as they prepare for Matarazzo’s potential departure. Former Bayern Munich defender and River Plate head coach Martin Demichelis is one of the candidates, as well as Karlsruhe head coach Christian Eichner, who started their 2.Bundesliga season with a 3-2 win against Nürnberg.
