It will be the first time that Germany has hosted a major tournament since the 2011 Women’s World Cup, after previously hosting the Euros in 1989 and 2001.

England will look to complete a hat-trick of consecutive European Championship trophies in Germany, after winning on home soil in 2022 and then again in Switzerland earlier this year.

Who did Germany beat to host Euro 2029?

Germany emerged victorious over bids from Poland and a joint bid from Denmark and Sweden to host Women’s Euro 2029.

Poland was pushing to become the first Eastern European nation to host a women’s tournament, after jointly hosting the men’s Euros alongside Ukraine in 2012.

Denmark previously held the Women’s Euros in 1991, while Sweden jointly held the tournament alongside Norway in 1997.

Germany could have faced greater competition if Italy and Portugal had not dropped out of the race to host the tournament.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed Germany as hosts during a short ceremony in Nyon on Wednesday.

Germany held the men’s version of the competition in 2024, where Spain beat England in the final.

How UEFA voted on the Euro 2029 hosts

The majority of UEFA’s executive committee voted for Germany to host Euro 2029.

In total, Germany received 15 out of 17 votes to stage the tournament in four years.

Two votes went to the joint bid by Sweden and Denmark, while there were no votes for Poland.

Which cities will host games at Women’s Euro 2029?

Germany confirmed the shortlist of host cities for Euro 2029 earlier this year before winning the rights to stage the tournament.

Berlin was surprisingly omitted despite being a host for the men’s Euro 2024 tournament.

That list includes;

  1. Cologne (RheinEnergieStadion) – 45,965
  2. Dortmund (Westfalenstadion) – 66,099
  3. Dusseldorf (Merkur-Spiel Arena) – 51,031
  4. Frankfurt (Waldstadion) – 53,800
  5. Hanover (Niedersachsenstadion) – 49,000
  6. Leipzig (Red Bull Arena) – 45,288
  7. Munich (Allianz Arena) – 70,000
  8. Wolfsburg (Volkswagen Arena) – 26,000

UK set to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup

The UK last week submitted the 2035 Women’s World Cup bid featuring 22 proposed stadiums.

Stadiums in Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, and Sunderland were included in England.

In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, there were stadiums in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Wrexham.

The next World Cup in 2027 will be hosted in Brazil, while the 2031 tournament is set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica.

There is only one bid for both the 2031 and 2035 tournaments, although FIFA won’t officially confirm the hosts of those tournaments until April 2026.
