Speaking at his opening press conference of the November international break, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann addressed why he called up Leroy Sané.
After the squad announcement last Thursday, the big surprise was the recall of Sané to the squad, despite his playing in Turkey for Galatasaray.
On why he decided to call up the winger (via @iMiaSanMia), Nagelsmann said:
“He still hasn’t met the numbers I want from him. It’s about the profile, it would’ve been more difficult for him [to get a call-up] if we had 6-7 players of his profile. I had a very good exchange with Leroy. He knows what I’m demanding from him. He doesn’t have countless more chances to prove himself here. I told him that openly. He’s a player who can do everything. He just has to give it his all and do it. He has everything that his profile needs, that’s why he’s getting another chance. He improved his numbers in the Champions League and Süper Lig, but he still has to do better”
The 29-year-old has played 15 games for Galatasaray since joining on a free transfer in the summer. During those games, he has scored three and assisted three.
Sané’s recall has meant several other players have missed out on the Germany squad.
Stuttgart duo Angelo Stiller and Maximilian Mittelstädt have both missed out. This has proven to be a big surprise, considering their individual form and Stuttgart’s form in the first three months of the season.
