Olympic and European champion Dzsenifer MarozsĆ”n has announced her retirement from the Germany womenās national team.
The 30-year-old midfielder informed coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg of her decision on Monday, and her last match for the national team will come against Brazil on 11 April.
āBecause of my serious knee injury in spring 2022, I realised that it felt right to retire from the national team,ā said MarozsĆ”n in a statement released by the DFB.
āMissing the European Championships in England was one of many signs. I remember well how I was at the 2011 World Cup, when I was also injured, didnāt even want to watch a game. Now I was the girlsā biggest fan on TV, without it hurting not to be there.
āAdded to this is the double burden, which wouldnāt be ideal. Iām in the club Iām doing well again, but my knee isnāt the same anymore ā I have to work a lot to be able to do all the training sessions and games. I think it would just be too much to do internationals, preparation and the tournament.ā
The Lyon star made her senior Germany debut against Australia back in October 2010 and went on to earn 111 international caps, scoring 33 goals.
In 2013 she was part of the side which won the European Championship in Sweden, before she also won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. From 2017 to 2019 she was voted Germanyās Footballer of the Year three years in a row.
āI have the greatest respect for Dzsenifer MarozsĆ”nās decision,ā said Voss-Tecklenburg.
āShe is a great personality and an outstanding footballer who has done an incredible amount for German football, but also as a role model.
āWe all appreciate her very much in the national team and can only thank her for everything. She should be given a dignified, best possible farewell. We will invite her again in April and give her one last bet against Brazil.ā
