Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has backed Florian Wirtz to succeed at Liverpool, following his high-profile move to Anfield.
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a then-British record £116m deal in the summer but has endured an underwhelming start in the Premier League. The 22-year-old is yet to record a goal or assist for Liverpool in 10 appearances across all competitions.
That form is a contrast to the last two seasons. Wirtz was one of just two players to record 10+ goals and 10+ assists in each of those campaigns across Europe’s top five leagues, alongside new Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah.
However, the midfielder is yet to show the form that made him so sought-after at Leverkusen, where he was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023/24 and 2024/25.
Despite that, Nagelsmann has no doubt that Wirtz will succeed at Liverpool. Speaking to Sport 1, he insisted Wirtz’s performances have been overly criticised and backed the German to Sport 1 to impress after a period of adaption.
“Even if he hasn’t scored a goal, he’s the player who creates among the most chances in the Premier League,” Nagelsmann said.
“It’s not his fault if he team-mate doesn’t score them, and the statistic isn’t even a third of the truth.
“He simply has to get used to the league. I’ve seen him feel completely liberated. He knows what he’s capable of and how things work.
“Not everything has always been handed to him – he’ll work hard now too.”
