After a shaky start to Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Thursday, Marc-André ter Stegen grew into the game and ended up making a total of nine saves.
For Netherlands coach Xavi Hernandez, who played alongside ter Stegen at Barcelona, the 34-year-old goalkeeper was the difference as Germany secured a point.

“He had an incredible game, I told Marc that after the match as well,” Xavi said at the post-match press conference, according to Bild.
“He’s a close friend, a top guy and a top professional. I’m happy for him, but he was playing against us…”
“Germany owe the point they got today to Marc-André,” he continued of the goalkeeper, who is currently on loan at Ajax from Barcelona.
It was injury-plagued ter Stegen’s first appearance for Germany since June 2025.
