Germany's 11-match winning streak came to a disappointing end as they surrendered a one-goal lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat in their final Group E fixture against Ecuador.
However, the result mattered little, as victories over Curacao (7-1) and Ivory Coast (2-1) had already secured top spot and a place in the knockout stage.
Julian Nagelsmann's side will now look to bounce back and book their place in the last 16 when they face Paraguay in the round of 32 on Monday at 22:30 CEST at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
"Before the tournament, we would have been delighted to qualify for the next round as group winners after only two games," Germany director of professional football Rudi Völler said at Saturday's press conference, reflecting on the team's performances so far.
"We deserved to achieve exactly that and were obviously very pleased. At the same time, we know how to put winning the group into perspective. The team and everyone around it know there is still room for improvement.
"Now is when the World Cup really gets going. Our full focus is on Monday's game against Paraguay. We believe we will give it our best and push ourselves to the limit. We want to deliver a really strong performance and reach the next round."
Sitting 41st in the FIFA World Rankings, Paraguay progressed from Group D with four points after finishing third behind Australia and the United States.
The South Americans got a dreadful start to the World Cup, losing 4-1 to the USA, before bouncing back to beat Turkey 1-0 and earning a goalless draw against Australia on Matchday 3 to seal their place in the knockout rounds.
Having lost Nico Schlotterbeck to an ankle injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament, Germany will hope to have Nathaniel Brown available again. The Eintracht Frankfurt left-back missed the 2-1 defeat to Ecuador with an adductor problem but is expected to be fit to face Paraguay.
Paraguay, meanwhile, will welcome back Miguel Almirón after he served a one-match suspension against Australia. Diego Gómez is suspended, while Omar Alderete is a doubt with a knee problem.
Predicted Germany XI: Neuer – Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Brown – Pavlović, Nmecha – Sané, Musiala, Wirtz – Havertz.
Predicted Paraguay XI: Gill – Velázquez, Gómez, Alderete – Cáceres, Galarza, Cubas, Maidana – Almirón, Enciso – Ávalos.
