Germany will look to quickly respond from Ecuador defeat in last-32 clash with seventh-best third-place finishers

Germany face Paraguay on Monday in their first World Cup knockout game since they last won the tournament in 2014.

After being eliminated from the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 editions, Die Mannschaft booked their place in the round of 32 as Group E winners thanks to a 7-1 drubbing of debutants Curacao and dramatic late 2-1 comeback win over Ivory Coast.

However, a shock 2-1 loss to Ecuador will have taken the wind out of their sails somewhat as they now come up against a Paraguay team who started the tournament with a woeful 4-1 loss to co-hosts the USA.

A hard-fought 1-0 win over Turkey and goalless draw with Australia eventually secured their passage through as the seventh of the eight best third-place finishers.

This is Paraguay’s first World Cup appearance since 2010, when they were knocked out by eventual winners Spain in the quarter-finals in South Africa.

Germany vs Paraguay is scheduled for a 9.30pm BST kick-off on Monday June 29, 2026.

The match will take place at Boston Stadium.

Germany vs Paraguay team news

Deniz Undav’s double against Ivory Coast was not enough to earn him a start for Germany against Ecuador, and that’s unlikely to change here.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will likely persist with Kai Havertz up top, with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz supporting him in attack. Neither have particularly impressed so far, but will hope this clash can help kick-start Germany’s tournament.

Nico Schlotterbeck’s ankle injury against the Ivorians has ruled him out of the World Cup, with Rudiger replacing him in that game and against Ecuador.

Left-back Nathaniel Brown missed that match with a minor injury concern, but should be available for this one.

Germany squad: Manuel Neuer, Oliver Baumann, Alexander Nubel, Joshua Kimmich, David Raum, Jonathan Tah, Waldemar Anton, Antonio Rudiger, Nathaniel Brown, Malick Thiaw, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Angelo Stiller, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Assan Ouedraogo, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, Felix Nmecha, Nadiem Amiri, Pascal Gross, Kai Havertz, Deniz Undav, Jamie Leweling, Nick Woltemade, Maximilian Beier

Former Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron was ruled out of Paraguay’s stalemate with the Socceroos after being red-carded for covering his mouth during a confrontation with Mert Muldur during the win over Turkey.

Coach Gustavo Alfaro will look to shut out Germany and build on the defensive foundations laid by Sunderland’s Omar Alderete and captain Gustavo Gomez.

Having Almiron back is also a huge boost. He is Paraguay’s talisman and will need to be on top form if they are to spring an upset in Boston.

Paraguay squad: Orlando Gill, Roberto Junior Fernandez, Gaston Olveira, Juan Caceres, Gustavo Velazquez, Gustavo Gomez, Junior Alonso, Jose Canale, Omar Alderete, Alexandro Maidana, Fabian Balbuena, Diego Gomez, Mauricio Magalhaes, Damian Bobadilla, Braian Ojeda, Andres Cubas, Matias Galarza, Alejandro Romero Gamarra, Gustavo Caballero, Ramon Sosa, Alex Arce, Gabriel Avalos, Isidro Pitta, Miguel Almiron, Julio Enciso, Antonio Sanabria

Germany vs Paraguay prediction

Germany will not take Paraguay’s threat lightly, even if Alfaro’s men have been rather uninspiring so far. However, they should have too much in attacking areas with Wirtz, Musiala and super-sub Undav.

It is still likely to be a tight affair, but Germany should just shade it.

Germany to win, 1-0.
