Germany’s 2014 Champion Steps Away From Football
Jerome Boateng officially announced his retirement from football on Saturday bringing down the curtain on glittering career that spanned 2 decades.
The 37 year old World cup winner shared heartfelt video on Instagram, saying:
"I played for many years with big clubs and my national team. I learned, won, lost and grew throughout. Football gave me so much but now it’s time for new chapter. I’m not forced to stop (I’m ready to. I’m thankful for everything, especially my family & children who were always there for me)"..
Born in Berlin, Boateng earned 76 cap for Germany between 2009 & 2018. He was a key figure in the nation’s 2014 World cup triumph in Brazil and also lifted the UEFA U21 Championship in 2009. In 2016 he was voted Germany’s Footballer of the Year.
Boateng spent decade at Bayern Munich after joining from Man City in 2011 winning nine Bundesliga titles and 2 Champions league trophies.
He later had spells with Lyon, Salernitana and Austrian side LASK where he ended his contract this summer after 14 appearances.
