Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer are set to attend ‘Unum, Benfica de Todos’, a session focused on the challenges facing refereeing and football governance, according to Glorioso 1904.

The former Liverpool and England captain will join the event, while Shearer, a Newcastle great and the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, is also due to take part.

The programme also features figures from the Benfica, business and sporting spheres. António Mexia, António Simões, José Eduardo Martins, Jaime Cancella de Abreu and Vanda Jesus will present and debate the movement’s proposals aimed at strengthening independence, transparency and credibility in national refereeing.

A central segment is a debate between Juan Ignacio Gallardo, director of Spanish newspaper Marca, and Pedro Henriques, a former international referee and refereeing specialist. Moderated by journalist Luís Aguilar, it is expected to address technology use and how refereeing structures operate in professional competitions.

UNUM will also unveil its first document, collating 17 proposals to reform Portuguese refereeing. These include creating an autonomous structure for professional refereeing and adopting semi-automated offside across all Liga stadiums. The movement plans to gather input from supporters, experts and stakeholders before finalising the document, which will then be delivered to Benfica’s board and the authorities responsible for Portuguese football.
