The father of Getafe winger Davinchi, David Cordon, has died after the Adamuz train disaster in Cordoba. Getafe confirmed on Wednesday night that he passed away after being taken to hospital with injuries from the crash.
The collision occurred on Sunday night when two trains derailed near Adamuz, one striking the other. It is Spain’s worst rail tragedy in decades, with 42 dead, dozens missing and hundreds injured. On Monday night authorities confirmed the circumstances of the derailments.
Cordon, a former footballer, played for Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Recreativo de Huelva. He won European beach football titles with Spain in 2001 and 2004.
Davinchi, 18, joined Getafe in the summer after breaking into Recreativo’s first team, having also spent time in the Real Betis academy. He is currently recovering from a meniscus injury.
After the news became public, Davinchi posted a tribute on social media. He said his faith would guide him, that he would stay strong and keep moving forward, and that everything he does will be for the brightest star in his sky. He vowed to fight on and told his father he loved him.
