Getafe v Villarreal: hostility, Fernando Roig in the box as Marcelino and Buchanan targeted | OneFootball

A hostile afternoon at the Coliseum brought about 10,000 spectators and cold of six to eight degrees as Getafe hosted Villarreal. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the mood was tense.

Home fans protested at the referee and targeted Marcelino, Buchanan and Parejo. Marcelino drew most ire over the 2019 Valencia v Getafe Copa semi, and Buchanan for an earlier incident with Luis Milla that led to Milla’s red card. Marcelino entered the pitch during a melee to try to calm it, and with José Bordalás suspended, the familiar Getafe chant also rang out.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig led the delegation, joined by chief executive Roig Negueroles, director of football Miguel Ángel Tena and Marcos Senna, institutional relations director. They watched from the directors’ box. The return flight from Madrid to Valencia was bumpy on approach but landed without issue.

There was no organised trip by Villarreal’s supporters because Getafe do not sell away tickets. The Coliseum is being rebuilt, the south end reduced and an upper tier removed. Work is due to finish in December 2027, lifting capacity to about 19,500 with a single ring.

Even so, some Villarreal fans, including the Peña el Os Groc de Madrid, found seats in home areas. TikTokers Danny and David were among them, creating groguet content.

Former Villarreal and Getafe striker Ikechukwu Uche, pivotal in Villarreal’s 2013 promotion, watched from the box. Also present were Gabi Fernández, recently Zaragoza’s coach until his dismissal, and Caminero.
