He was supposed to be one of the most interesting new faces of the Roma season, but instead Daniele Ghilardi has become something of a mystery.
Arriving from Verona with a reputation as an emerging talent among Italian defenders, the 2003-born player has only played six minutes in Serie A and zero appearances in the Europa League, quickly finding himself on the sidelines of Gian Piero Gasperini’s selection process.
Despite an excellent summer with the Italy Under-21 team, Ghilardi has never managed to carve out a niche for himself in the Giallorossi’s defence.
Relegated to the sidelines since the first friendlies, the young centre-back is now considering a loan move to avoid missing an entire season.
The most realistic option, writes Tuttosport, is a temporary transfer in the January transfer window.
Torino are the most interested club, with coach Marco Baroni adopting a tactical system compatible with the player’s characteristics.
Torino sporting director Vagnati has already been in contact with the player’s team, and his Under status represents an added advantage, as it would not require changes to the Over squad.
Atalanta have also shown interest, but internal competition in the defensive department makes the move less appealing.
Everything suggests that, in the coming weeks, Torino could become the hottest option for revitalizing the young defender’s talent.
