Gi Fernandes has been withdrawn from the Brazil women’s squad after a rectus femoris injury in her left thigh. Head coach Arthur Elias has called up Bruninha of Gotham FC to replace the Corinthians right-back. Left-back Isabela of Paris Saint-Germain is also out with a right biceps femoris issue, with Pachuca forward Aline Gomes drafted in.

The injury happened on Friday in the first half of Corinthians’ 2-2 draw with Fluminense in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The player said in a social media post that she felt discomfort early on, tried to continue, then underwent treatment and tests the next day.

She added that, although she had hoped it was not serious, the recovery window would not allow her to join the squad for the March friendlies. She was later seen limping heavily as she left the stadium.

This would have been Gi’s first senior call-up. Corinthians also have Lelê, Thais Ferreira, Tamires, Duda Sampaio, Ana Vitória, Gabi Zanotti and Jaqueline with Brazil, while Dayana Rodríguez, Belén Aquino and Gisela Robledo are on duty with Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia respectively.

With the Fifa international window, Corinthians return on 13 March against Palmeiras at 21:30 at Arena Barueri, in the third round of the Brasileirão Feminino.
