Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election as FIFA president is drawing overwhelming support, with more than 200 of the 211 member associations already behind him, The Guardian reports.
In office since 2016, the Swiss administrator is seeking a fourth term. The vote, due at the FIFA Congress in March 2027, looks short on jeopardy given the breadth of endorsements.
A handful of European associations are among the holdouts, including Germany, which has yet to offer formal backing. Some federations feel they are being pressed by FIFA to reaffirm allegiance, something its code of ethics does not permit.
Would-be challengers have until 18 November to declare, yet no figure has shown concrete interest so far.
Infantino has faced criticism over perceived closeness to Donald Trump, highlighted by the episode surrounding the annulment of Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension. That has not appeared to weaken his standing among FIFA members.
