Gianni Infantino in Colombia for Abelardo de la Espriella’s inauguration amid FIFA unrest | OneFootball

Gianni Infantino arrived in Colombia on Friday, amid the fallout from FIFA’s scrapped plan to privatise part of the World Cup, to attend the inauguration of far-right president Abelardo de la Espriella.

According to L'Équipe, he flew into Cali and is joined by Alejandro Dominguez, the Conmebol president. The Colombian federation shared photos of their arrival and said they would visit a children’s football festival in the morning.

De la Espriella was elected in late June. He marked his victory wearing a Colombia shirt carrying his slogan and the nickname El Tigre.

Infantino was recently in Morocco, attending the Fête du Trône on 30 July, the anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s enthronement. The Times reports that he is said to have sought the country’s support by promising the 2030 World Cup final, with the tournament co-hosted by Portugal and Spain, plus three matches in South America.

While FIFA and its president have apologised publicly and abandoned the privatisation project, discontent endures. UEFA has maintained its threat to boycott FIFA competitions.
