Gianni Infantino proposes consultation to reform FIFA amid crisis | OneFootball

Gianni Infantino has moved to ease FIFA’s governance crisis by proposing a time limited consultation to reform decision making. The president, who is seeking re election, outlined the plan in a letter to all 211 member federations.

According to Le Progres, he wants a direct, structured and time limited process with confederations, associations and stakeholders to strengthen FIFA’s procedures. He says initial proposals will be reviewed by the Council on 15 October, with later written submissions also considered.

Any statutory changes would be sent to Congress for scrutiny and approval. The consultation invites ideas on earlier institutional involvement, the respective roles of the President, Bureau, Council and Congress, and improving transparency, participation and accountability.

The move follows outrage over his aborted plan to set up a commercial company open to private investors to house FIFA assets, including the World Cup. The scheme, called Fifa Forward Entreprise, was withdrawn after fierce opposition from UEFA, Concacaf and the AFC.

Infantino says the proposal became public before FIFA’s internal process had concluded and before a full presentation to the Council and member associations. He accepts this created concern and the impression decisions had already been taken, which he insists was not the case.

UEFA continue to press for his departure and are preparing a mismanagement complaint. Aleksander Ceferin and Victor Montagliani have urged FIFA to pay at least 10 million dollars to each federation and commission an independent audit. For now Infantino is the only candidate for the 18 March 2027 vote.
