Athletico-PR full-back Gilberto has moved to distance himself from his father’s comments after Corinthians faced Athletico-PR on Thursday, with the player’s camp issuing a clarifying note.
“He went to Palmeiras very early, and I always asked for a chance at Corinthians, ‘give my son a chance to play for Corinthians, we are Corinthians supporters’. It is my dream. But you know how it is at Corinthians. So he went to Palmeiras. I supported Palmeiras in those five years he was there. People ask, ‘how can you support Palmeiras when you are Corinthians?’ Mate, your child comes first. If he plays for Flamengo, which is a team I detest, I will support Flamengo,” he told Rádio Craque Neto.
A subsequent note from Gilberto’s representatives distanced the player from the remarks, describing them as his father’s personal views. It also referenced a long-standing estrangement, stating that his father’s statements do not reflect Gilberto’s values or professional decisions.
The note reaffirmed Gilberto’s respect, affection and gratitude to Palmeiras, crediting the club with transforming his life, believing in his potential and playing a decisive role in his development.
Gilberto came through Palmeiras’ academy from the age of 12. Now 21, he is on loan at Athletico-PR and is currently a reserve, with six Brasileirão appearances so far.
