Supporters bound for Gillette Stadium during the World Cup are facing eye-watering transport and parking bills, in some cases higher than a Ligue 1 ticket. According to L'Équipe, the costs mount whichever option is chosen.
The venue is not in Boston, it sits about 30 kilometres south in Foxborough, and reaching it quickly gets expensive. The quickest route is by rail.
The MBTA is running 14 express trains on matchdays between South Station and Foxboro, as it does for Patriots games, but the return that usually costs $20 to $25 has been set at $80 for the tournament. The operator’s general manager has called that price fair given security and staffing, and most train seats for the first matches staged in the city have already gone.
The slower Boston Stadium Express shuttle, serving around 20 pick-up points across the region including the airport and Providence, is $95 return. Driving brings expected queues on the main approach, and parking via FIFA partner app JustPark ranges from $175 to $600 for a group-stage game.
Free matchday transport was standard at recent World Cups, notably in Russia in 2018 where ticket holders rode inter-city trains without charge. Although early host-city agreements in North America envisaged the same, FIFA changed course in 2023, asking only for at-cost public transport on matchdays. Elsewhere prices are far lower, with trips in Atlanta, Houston and Seattle costing under five dollars, Philadelphia at $2.90 each way, Miami running free shuttles for ticket holders and Kansas City offering $15 links, while reaching New York’s MetLife Stadium by train is $98, putting it alongside Boston among the most expensive.
