A quirk on the Liga Portugal website shows FC Porto’s new forward Gimenez registered with Italian nationality.
O Jogo points out that the Mexico international, born in Buenos Aires, also holds Italian citizenship, which enables him to be registered in Portugal as an EU national.
This status does not alter his link to Mexico. He grew up there and represents the country, while his Italian nationality comes via family heritage.
Using his Italian passport simplifies the paperwork around his move. EU footballers are not subject to the same immigration steps required of non-EU signings.
In that context, bodies such as AIMA no longer need to intervene, since he is treated as an EU citizen rather than a foreign national from outside the bloc.
