It might seem like Manchester United are prioritising midfield reinforcements before the summer window slams shut, but that might not be the case if a recent report is to be believed.

Carlos Baleba is INEOS’ primary target, with Ruben Amorim pushing for the Cameroonian to be brought to Old Trafford to strengthen the spine of the team.

However, according to The Times, the Red Devils are also keeping an eye out for defensive additions, having seen Jonny Evans retire in the summer, and Victor Lindelof leave upon the expiration of his contract.

Lisandro Martinez remains sidelined, while both Luke Shaw, and Matthijs de Ligt do not have the best of injury records.

Defender race

As per journalist Paul Joyce, the Old Trafford side attempted a last-minute hijack of Liverpool’s £26 million deal for Parma centre back Giovanni Leoni.

However, the 18-year-old seems to have chosen Anfield as his next destination with Fabrizio Romano even giving it his trademark “Here we go” seal of approval.

“Liverpool are closing in on a £26 million deal for Parma’s teenage centre back Giovanni Leoni, who will go straight into the first team set-up.

“Leoni, 18, has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and Liverpool are poised to beat Italian clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan in the race to secure his signing.

“It is understood that Premier League sides, including Manchester United and Newcastle United, also showed late interest in the player.”

The 6ft 5in monster at the back had impressed all his suitors as he more than held his own in the Serie A last season, which prompted Liverpool to pounce. United have also been long-term admirers.

United fans should not worry too much as the club already have Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven impressing for the first team.

As things stand, a midfielder and goalkeeper is more important than a defender. Maybe next season, INEOS will prioritise the centre-back position.
